Cobo Center needs to be competitive on its costs
So, the deal is done to expand Detroit's Cobo Center convention hall and have it run by a regional authority.
Yippee, says part of me. I was afraid to write about it until now, even though the story broke Tuesday. I imagined that the zany Detroit City Council might reconvene before the Saturday deadline and reject the plan, as it did once before, under the guise of protecting a so-called Detroit "jewel" from the clutches of outsiders. That didn't happen this time, so yippee for that.

Whatever you thought you knew about Cobo Center, think again.
The reality is worse, much worse.
And that admission is a wonderful thing, because without it, Detroit's hopes of saving its big auto show, or growing its convention business, or taking a giant step toward regional cooperation, are dead in the water.

Cobo board: Center might not expand: Consulting firm is hired for planning study, which will help guide decision A long-awaited expansion of Cobo Center convention hall in Detroit may not happen after all. Members of the regional five-member authority that took over Cobo last year told Free Press editors and writers Monday that they would proceed with an expansion of Cobo only if a solid business case emerges from a strategic planning study that is now starting. The results of the study are due around June.

DETROIT - Monday, April 12, 2010 - The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority has awarded its bus shuttle service contract to Trinity Transportation Group, Inc. of Wyandotte. This contract primarily gives the Authority the ability to offer its larger clients transportation to and from their hotels.

The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority Awards New Food Service Contract
DETROIT - Monday, April 12, 2010 - The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority voted unanimously to award the food service and concession contract for Cobo Center to Volume Services, Inc., (d.b.a.) Centerplate. The seven-year contract will commence on May 16, 2010, replacing the 10-year presence of Aramark and its subsidiaries at Cobo Center. Under the terms of the agreement with Centerplate, the Authority will have the option to renew the agreement for one three year period.
