Shell Eco-marathon: See how far your imagination can take you
Experience innovation like never before at Shell Eco-marathon Americas at TCF Center in Downtown Detroit, April 10-12, 2015, from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily. This free, multi-sensory experience features a variety of activities that are both exciting and educational for all ages! Starting with a festive opening ceremony on Friday, April 10 at 9 a.m., visitors are invited to go on an incredible, interactive journey of today and tomorrow’s energy and mobility, including a day in the life of someone in Detroit in 2050. Then, cheer the more than 1,000 students from around the Americas as they push the limits of efficiency with their student designed, built and tested vehicles to see which team can drive the farthest distance using the least energy. Which teams will prevail? Will the Americas’ astonishing record of 3,587 miles per gallon be beat? There’s only one way to find out.
About Shell Eco-marathon
For 30 years, Shell Eco-marathon competitions have challenged future automotive engineers and scientists to push the limits -- drive the farthest distance using the least energy. Student-built prototype vehicles have achieved more than 3,500 miles per gallon in the Americas challenge.
This year marks the ninth edition of Shell Eco-marathon Americas and the first ever in the auto industry capital. More than 100 schools plan to send 144 teams to Detroit April 10 – 12, competing in vehicles they have designed, built and tested over the past year.
Shell Eco-marathon Americas welcomes teams from Michigan including University of Detroit Jesuit High School, University of Detroit Mercy, University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, Lawrence Technological University, Plymouth Canton Educational Park and Lapeer County Education Technology Center.
Will veteran team Université Laval from Quebec, Canada, which took first place last year, and broke the Americas mileage record in 2013 with an astonishing 3,587 mpg, hold onto their five-year winning streak or will one of the other 100 teams finally wrest the title away? There is only one way to find out.
Shell Eco-marathon in TCF Center
With the start/finish line in front of TCF Center, visitors can witness more than 1,000 students from around the Americas as they push the limits of efficiency with their student designed, built and tested vehicles through the streets of downtown Detroit. Their goal: to see which team can drive the farthest distance using the least energy.
Inside TCF Center, visitors are invited to go on an incredible, interactive journey of today and tomorrow’s energy and mobility, including a day in the life of someone in Detroit in 2050. Covering more than half-a-million square feet indoors, this innovative experience features many hands-on activities including a Kinetic Energy Dance Floor where you provide the power, a mini-Shell Eco-marathon competition with salt water-powered cars that you build plus much more. Get a sneak peek behind-the-scenes as the students ready their futuristic-looking vehicles for the ultimate energy challenge.
